Character Day

By the time Halloween rolls around I'm usually prepared to dig out my sewing machine and begin what ends up being several nights of cutting, pinning, sewing, and swearing. I don't mind though. To tell you the truth I quite enjoy the challenge it gives me (You will never hear me say this while the project is ongoing however). I have very clear memories of my mom when I was child with needles sticking out of her mouth and the sewing machine humming as she fed it the material for our new dresses. Unfortunately, I spent too much time just watching and not enough time practicing. How could I have known that I would grow up one day and get married and have kids who would need me to make them costumes? And costumes for some random day NOT in October at that. That's ok because you know what I figured out? Sewing skills are acquired through osmosis. Well, the basics anyway. I think all that watching paid off in the end.
They had character day at their school today. Each kid is supposed to dress up like a character in a book. Eden wanted to be a vampire (so she could paint her lips red) and Fox wanted to be spider/bat/super-man, which we firmly said no to. They had to go as an actual character in a book. So, after a little thought the two decided to be Amelia Bedelia and Harry the dirty dog. The costumes were pretty easy to put together. The only tricky thing was the white apron for Eden. I made it by looking at the one Mom made Eden a few months back. How did I do? It only took me FIVE hours! That's osmosis at work for you. I'm pretty proud of myself, although I'm not showing you any close-ups...also, all of the nutter butters are gone...Andrew was in charge of Fox's costume. A quick bike cleaning with a white t-shirt and shorts fixed them up real nice. Fox asked me this morning if he could roll around in the dirt at recess since he was Harry the Dirty Dog. Eh, ok. Why not?
