Since we failed to send out a Christmas card this year (actually, in 9 years of marriage, we've only succeeded twice), this blog entry will serve as our greetings to everyone who bothers to read it.
Before making our annual trek to Louisiana, the kids met the "real" Santa right here in DC. Actually, we've never seen such an elaborate performance from Santa, complete with songs, poetry recitations, a lecture on the elf trades, and detailed instrutions for the kids on how to prepare for his arrival on Christmas Eve. After that, we made our usual rounds to other Christmas events here, including the National Botanical Gardens' train and fairy display, and the People's Tree in front of the Capitol.
The kids got great gifts this year. Fox made out with a lot of Star Wars toys, Legos, and Nerf weapons, among other cool stuff, but the self-inflating whoopie cushion (which was on the top of his list for Santa), may have been his favorite.
Eden got a whole array of great gifts, but the teepee Grandma and Grandpa Burton made for her Native American dolls was especially uniqe.
The best part of our trip, of course, was not the gifts but the time we spent with family. It's the one time that all of our siblings and parents are all in one place. We had a blast cycling, singing songs, making a seesaw, decorating the tree, giving presents to others, having a bonfire, eating great food, visiting great-grandparents, and just playing. It's the best two weeks of the year, hands down.
While there, we also had a couple of birthdays for cousins. Sequoia turned 9 and had a Wreck-it Ralph party, complete with the most colorful cake ever. And Sawyer celebrated his birthday with a mustache-themed party.
