Fox will turn 4 next week. We had his birthday party today. After Andrew introduced him to Star Wars a couple of months ago, he has been obsessed. So you can guess the theme of his party.
Grandma Pam made him a Jedi robe and sent a lightsaber so that he could be dressed appropriately for his party. Fox was thrilled, as you can see.
Luckily, Star Wars party decorations are easy to come by. Add in an R2-D2 camp chair, a couple of movie posters, a vinyl record of the original film music, and some Star Wars-themed foods, and you're all set. My favorites were the Yoda ears (edamame), lightsabers (pretzel stix wrapped in fruit roll-ups), and the Yoda Soda (Sprite and lime sherbet).
Our first party game was a variation on hot potato, using a Death Star set to explode. Once a kid was out, he got to select a sticker. Eden made good use of hers. Fox was still in full-costume at this point.
Next, each kid made their own lightsaber out of half a pool noodle, silver duct tape, and black electrical tape. These were the hit of the party! Eden held hers aloft and announced that she was Darth Maul's wife.
The kids then used their homemade lightsabers to try to keep 30 odd balloons from hitting the patio. Basically, it was a free-for-all.
Fox quickly realized his pool-noodle lightsaber was not going to take out the Darth Vadar pinata. But it only took a few wacks with the stick. But nobody seemed to mind not having a turn--they were satisfied to get the treats.
The birthday cake was topped with the Millenium Falcon, an AT-AT Imperial Walker and Snowspeeder, and Darth Vadar. If you have a son who's getting into Star Wars, you have to start learning these names. He will ask you! Fox was thrilled to see it.
After the party was over, the kids all ended up in the front yard where an all-out lightsaber brawl ensued. Good thing we went with pool noodles, and not broom sticks.
And my neighbor showed me how to take a video with my camera. My accidental first shoot caught some of the fight.
