Today, thanks to a tip from Grandpa Burton, Fox and I witnessed a once in a lifetime sight: Space Shuttle Discovery's final flight as a NASA Boeing 747 brought it to the Dulles International Airport. As we waded through a sea of hopeful spectators on the highway, having been turned away from the already-full Air and Space Museum parking lot, I was worried that we had wasted our morning and would not catch a glimpse of Discovery. Then, as we sat a red light, I saw someone point up in the sky and there it was. Right there!!! It was so low in the sky; Fox and I cheered and shouted and, yes, I cried. Later, as we played at a farm nearby, Discovery circled back around and I snapped these shots. It was a bit higher in the air than our first sighting (but I didn't have the camera ready while driving), but we still got some decent shots.

When we got home, Fox wanted to tape his space shuttle to his 747. I suggested hair ties, and he spent the next half hour doing his own fly-by's.

Also, I got a cute shot of him at the farm.

Also, we're waiting for pictures from Grandpa from their visit. I let him do most of the photography while they were here--except for a batch I took that were overexposed--so we don't have very many shots of them with the kids.

Mandy! I can't tell you how much I love the shuttle Discovery. I almost revere it as a person, as weird as that may seem. Needless to say, I'm extremely jealous you saw it fly for the last time. Hopefully, I can make it to the Smithsonian soon to see it. I miss NASA's shuttle program, there was something magical about it.
SO COOL! You guys got an awesome view. I love how Fox hooked the shuttle to his plane when he got home.
